Looking for a festive new treat to gift friends and neighbors? Try chocolate dipped oranges! They look super fancy, but are quite simple to make. Thinly sliced orange segments are dried, dipped in cinnamon dark chocolate coating, and sprinkled with sea salt. They are the perfect allergy friendly treat; free from dairy, gluten, and nuts!
This tasty treat reminds me of the chocolate oranges sold around the holidays. I have to admit, you don’t get the satisfying THWACK that comes with the chocolate oranges. But, these chocolate dipped oranges will make your house smell heavenly.
I highly recommend purchasing organic oranges for this project, because you’ll be consuming the peel. Navel, blood orange, or cara cara oranges are all great options for drying.
To get the prettiest look, turn your orange so the stem ends run horizontal to the counter. Then slice the oranges very thin, discarding the end pieces. It’s important to slice your orange no thicker than 1/4″ before drying, otherwise they will be too tough to bite through.
I sprinkled these chocolate dipped oranges with Jacobsen’s Vanilla Bean Sea Salt. It’s my absolute favorite flavored salt and is perfect for dessert. Unrelated, I also highly recommend it on coffee ice cream.
Preheat oven to 200°. Fit a baking sheet with a wire rack.
Wash oranges. Then slice into 1/8-1/4" thin rounds, leaving the peel intact.
Sprinkle both sides of the oranges with coconut sugar and then place on wire rack.
Dry in oven for 2½-3 hours, until most of the moisture is gone but the oranges are still pliable. If you cut the oranges too thick it will take much longer to dry.
While oranges cool, make the chocolate coating. Heat a sauce pot over medium-low, add chocolate chips and coconut oil to pan. Stir until chocolate melts and becomes smooth and shiny.
Remove from heat and stir in cinnamon.
Remove wire rack from baking sheet. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
Dip cooled orange slices in chocolate, using a spatula to paint the chocolate halfway up the orange on both sides. Place chocolate dipped oranges on parchment lined sheet. Sprinkle with flake salt.
Once all oranges have been dipped, place baking sheet in fridge until chocolate is set (about 30 minutes).
Transfer oranges to an airtight container.
Will keep for up to 10 days.
